FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo
XTRM Group welcomes the groundbreaking of the Dangote East Africa Refinery in Lamu, Kenya, a landmark $16 billion investment that will establish a 700,000-barrel-per-day refinery and petrochemical complex—expected to be the largest refining facility in East Africa and one of the continent’s most significant industrial investments. Developed by Dangote Group with support from the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and strategically located along the Lamu Port–South Sudan–Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor, the project has the potential to transform regional energy security by processing crude from East and Southern Africa and supplying refined petroleum products to Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and other markets; it is also expected to generate tens of thousands of jobs, stimulate local manufacturing and logistics, strengthen Lamu Port and the LAPSSET corridor, support additional power generation of up to 1,000 MW, and create new opportunities for businesses across multiple sectors.
For East and Central Africa in particular, this initiative represents an important step toward reducing dependence on imported refined petroleum products, retaining more value within African economies, connecting landlocked markets to strategic infrastructure, and strengthening intra-African trade and industrial capacity. At XTRM Group, we see the Lamu refinery as part of a broader African transformation: moving from exporting raw resources toward processing, manufacturing, investing, trading and creating value on the continent itself. From Lagos to Lamu, African capital, entrepreneurship, infrastructure and expertise are increasingly demonstrating that Africa can build at scale for Africa and for the world. As this project moves forward, its long-term success will depend not only on engineering and investment, but also on responsible development, transparent stakeholder engagement, environmental stewardship, skills development and meaningful participation by local and regional economies. The groundbreaking in Lamu therefore marks more than the beginning of another refinery—it signals another step toward a more connected, industrialized, energy-secure and economically integrated Africa, and toward the brighter Africa we believe is possible.
