FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo
XTRM Group congratulates the United Republic of Tanzania on the commissioning of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP), a landmark infrastructure project on the Rufiji River with an installed capacity of 2,115 MW. Commissioned on August 22, 2026, by Her Excellency, President Samia Suluhu Hassan, the project has increased Tanzania’s installed generation capacity to approximately 4,646 MW, against peak demand of about 2,271 MW, creating an estimated 2,375 MW surplus with potential for regional power exports. XTRM Group commends Tanzania for this major investment in energy infrastructure, which can strengthen energy security, reduce power shortages, support industrialization, improve productivity, and create better conditions for businesses and households across the country.
The significance of JNHPP extends well beyond Tanzania’s borders. Reliable and affordable electricity is a fundamental enabler of regional economic development, powering industries, mines, farms, hospitals, schools, telecommunications networks, digital infrastructure, and small and medium-sized enterprises. Tanzania’s growing capacity and its position between the Eastern and Southern African power systems create an opportunity to deepen regional electricity trade. Discussions and arrangements involving countries including the Republic of Kenya and the Republic of Zambia, alongside existing regional connections involving the Republic of Burundi, demonstrate how Tanzania’s additional generation capacity can contribute to a more interconnected regional energy market. For the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), greater access to regional power markets can be particularly significant given the country’s enormous energy needs and the importance of reliable electricity to industrialization, mining, manufacturing, agriculture, digital transformation, and broader economic development.
XTRM Group salutes the Government and people of Tanzania for demonstrating the transformative potential of strategic infrastructure investment. JNHPP is more than a power project, it is an example of how major infrastructure can generate benefits beyond national borders and contribute to shared prosperity across Africa. We believe that stronger regional electricity interconnections between Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia, Burundi, and the DRC can unlock new opportunities for investment, trade, industrial development, and improved quality of life. As African economies continue to grow, XTRM Group encourages governments, investors, infrastructure developers, and private-sector leaders to pursue ambitious projects that connect markets and build Africa’s productive capacity. The future of Africa requires infrastructure at scale, and projects such as JNHPP demonstrate that brighter days are possible when African nations invest in their own development and in regional cooperation.
