FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo
XTRM Group salutes the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on October 10, 2026, between Ecobank Group and China’s Cross-Border Interbank Payment System (CIPS) to strengthen Renminbi (RMB) payment and clearing connectivity between China and Africa, marking an important step toward more efficient cross-border financial services and deeper economic integration between the two regions. With Ecobank’s pan-African banking network spanning 34 African markets and China–Africa bilateral trade reaching approximately US$348 billion in 2025, this partnership is expected to simplify RMB-denominated transactions, reduce settlement complexity, improve access to cross-border payment channels, and help businesses navigate the financial processes involved in importing, exporting, and investing across these markets.
By providing African companies with more direct options for settling transactions with Chinese partners, the initiative could help reduce dependence on multiple currency conversions, improve payment efficiency, and support greater predictability in trade costs, while opening new possibilities for African exporters, manufacturers, agricultural producers, infrastructure developers, and entrepreneurs seeking to access China’s vast market. As Africa continues to strengthen its financial infrastructure and diversify its international commercial relationships, the Ecobank–CIPS partnership demonstrates how strategic financial cooperation can unlock new avenues for trade, investment, and business growth.
We see this development as another step toward a more connected, competitive, and economically empowered continent, where stronger payment systems help African businesses scale across borders, attract investment, and build lasting partnerships with global markets, helping shape the way for a brighter Africa.
